I'd never even heard of him a year or two ago, being in the UK - but you're not the first to ask on SE, so now I do :) Thorpe is quite a common name over here, originally meaning small village or hamlet. I actually grew up somewhere called Edenthorpe, with Armthorpe next door and Scunthorpe nearby too, amongst others!
