One thing I miss is our field of stars background image.
Now I've noticed that the Mathematics Stack still has its background image, even though it already has the new theme.
Can we please have our stars back?
The left-nav is in black, so that would need another colour for it work against such a dark background, of course.
Yes, we do
The custom background is one of the main things that is unique to our site and gives us our own identity on the network. Without it we look just like everyone else. Consider this answer to the linked meta:
My main gripe with the new theme is that once the site header has scrolled out of view, there is no stylistic indication of which Stack I'm on,...
My main gripe with the new theme is that once the site header has scrolled out of view, there is no stylistic indication of which Stack I'm on, and the only indication at all is the place holder in the search bar.
Edit: okay, and the badge shapes if visible.
While I understand the reasons behind the changes, this is a severe loss of Stack identity.
This might not be a bug per se, rather than a criticism on the design, but it's IMHO a major issue, especially for someone used to the original design and the ideas and themes it induced and was based on.
The new design seems to significantly lack any red. In fact red seems to have entirely disappeared from it, while the original design featured red quite ...
Stars are commonly used to denote favorites
It’s not merely Science Fiction and Fantasy Stack Exchange that uses a star to denote favorites. The other stacks do, too. Here are the “favorite” icons for Worldbuilding, Meta Stack Exchange, and Physics:
Note that the physics icon is even in a circle.
They’re commonly used for this purpose in other contexts, ...
OK, after puttering around some more in the bar, I realized that the "Stack Exchange" logo was a menu, and both missing links were under it. Not the height of convenience but a far better situation than not being available at all.
status-completed It's now fixed.
Badges in the list of other accounts are very cramped.
Here's the accounts part of my Activity tab:
Those badges are very tightly spaced – a bit of padding on the left-hand side would look a lot nicer.
Note that this was an issue with the old theme too but seeing as this is a theme change we might as well address it now.
Using the same search from this answer I see the following results on default view.
The colour difference between an accepted answer result and just an answer result is so minimal it is next to impossible to see. Can we ...
The buttons in the review queues are just too light, I initially saw them in the Low Quality Post queue and was trying to work out why they were all disabled.
It looks like this issue may only be affecting mobile as I just did a First Post review on the main site on desktop and it looked fine.
The buttons on mobile should match those on desktop.
Here is a custom background idea. Split SF and F maps. I mocked a rough concept to give a general idea.
The good thing about this is that it reflects both sides of our community, and since its a map, we can make it light enough to make SO happy, and still have a bit of personality to it. In retrospect, I'm thinking that a version that has a sepia tone would ...
Disclaimer: I'm no artist, as you'll see later on, so this will mainly be a post of ideas rather than any proof of concept.
The theme should keep as close to the old one as possible. This means make the side bars black and have the star field back again. However, to satisfy the need for the left nav to have black text and so a lighter theme I have three ...
I can’t speak for the SE Staff, but I would guess the answer is no.
Quoting SE dev Ebenezer Sklivvze on Meta.se question asking for something similar:
Declining as there are no plans to differentiate the sites on mobile (see e.g. the mobile apps).
Since Meta.se is much larger than SFF, and didn’t get an exception, I doubt we’d get one either.
Let me lead with the fact I did not design the background but I am a graphic designer of online images for CSS backgrounds. With that said, the background is not a natural starfield as would be seen in space and instead would appear to be a regular grid of images which can imitate a star field.
If you look closely you can see the reappearance of artistic ...
status-bydesign This is intended styling. If user has already gained particular privilege, then we simply fade it out a little bit.
The links on the privileges page need more contrast. They're pretty difficult to read right now.
Whilst I've seen it pointed out on SO meta since the left nav was launched a few times it seems even worse on the other sites. This is because we also have the hamburger icon for the StackExchange network button. To make this slightly less hellish could the hamburger for this button be removed?
For reference I am talking about this one:
This appears to have been fixed in the recent CSS updates around the user flair box
From How did the Master escape from the Eye of Harmony?:
From What was the benefit of the belts given by Galadriel to 3 Fellowship members?:
Chrome 47, Windows 8.1
Because you've visited his profile page.
The CSS make the unvisited link "strong blue".
The exact colour code for visited links is #c18215, which is described as "strong orange".
Our site is most definitely called “Science Fiction & Fantasy”, you can see it clearly in our logo.
We've figured out what font is used for the “Fantasy” part in the thread What is the Fantasy font? , and “Jantasy” looks different from what we have in the site logo.
The above image shows “Jantasy” above and “Fantasy” below for comparison. Compare ...
When Stack Exchange discontinued the blogs and began phasing them out, we were sort-of warned this might happened.
What SE committed to was that, as long as we maintained the correct link structure on the off-site blog, they would maintain the redirect from scifi.blogoverflow.com to our blog on thesffblog.com. That redirect does still work, so any links you ...
The one-winged angel thingy is very small and hard to see.
Can we please blow it up a bit, maybe crop the image to make it wider?
The left and right columns clash badly with the header and footer.
We were previously told that those columns were stylable. Can we please keep the starfield there?
On meta, the header background does not match the header ...
tldr; Keep the star field but add a bright element like a star/sun that will act as the background for the left nav.
How about just using a star-field that has a gradient where it is lighter in the center and fades to stars near the edges? I found one image that is free "No attribution required" and looks ok. There might be other ones out there that would ...
I like the dark theme. It's an "at-a-glance" indication that you're in the meta site, literally the site behind the main site. The symbolism isn't lost on me.
I do think you should have the ability to change it though. Many sites have a button to click between differing themes.
#EAA4A4 seems too jarring - it almost emphasizes deleted content when it should really be downplayed a bit.
Having said that, I agree that the existing color is a bit too light. Starting next build, we'll use the same deleted content background color here as we do on Stack Overflow. It should be easier to tell apart.
